The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
